Common causes of distracted driving (other than cell phones)

by | May 30, 2019 | Uncategorized

Thanks to state campaigns, virtually everyone behind the wheel is now aware of the dangers of distracted driving. A group of students atPflugerville High Schooleven created a PSA to warn people of the dangers of distracted driving, and so far, it has garnered over 3,000 views on YouTube.

However, there are many other ways to end up in acar crash other than by looking at your phone. Thousands of Texans end up in car accidents every day due to common tasks they think they can handle simultaneously while driving. Everyone needs to do better when it comes to driving safely.

Adjusting the music

Most people like to listen to somethingwhile behind the wheel. Whether you listen to the radio or your favorite songs on Spotify, you want to put your playlist on before hitting the road. Messing with the volume or stations can cause you to take your mind and eyes off the road.

Handling pets or children

You want to make sure any young children or pets you travel with are secure before taking off. You especially want to ensure your pets are in place. You should invest in a harness to keep in the car. In the event of a collision, you would not want your furry friend to go flying. Additionally, your kids should be well-behaved enough to not yell or scream in the car. Loud noises can upset the driver and cause an accident.

Zoning out

Occasionally, it does not take anything tangible to cause a wreck. Many drivers travel the same route every day to get to and from work. People have a tendency to daydream and zone out. They end up home (and hopefully not in an accident) and wonder how they got there. Your full attention needs to be on the road at all times.
